FLEMINGTON Race 7

No. 11 ANABANDANA

In a very open renewal of the Bobbie Lewis Quality, Robert Smerdon’s talented mare looks one of the horses most likely to improve. After trialling well for Smerdon in July and August, Anabandana returned for the spring at Moonee Valley under a hefty 58 kilograms. Settling back in the field on a day when it was most difficult to make ground from off the speed, she ran to the line nicely without threatening the winner. A good four kilogram drop is not the only thing in her favour today, Smerdon has successfully targeted the race in the past with a similar style of mare, Lone Rock, and there is a sense of careful placement this weekend.

SUGGESTED BET Take an each-way bet at double-figure odds.

THE ROUGHIE

WARWICK FARM Race 5

No. 6 MAULES CREEK

The Chelmsford Stakes looks to be a pretty open race with no guarantees that Secret Admirer will be at her peak at her second run back from a spell, so there are some value each-way options. Maules Creek is yet to prove himself at weight-for-age, but he did give a hint that he could hold his own at this level when he ran a luckless race in the Warwick Stakes behind Pinwheel first-up. He had no luck getting clear of the pack from 400 metres, but poked through to finish with purpose from the 100. Given extra distance this week he may put his head into a place.

FAR AND WIDE

WARWICK FARM Race 7

No. 2 RAIN AFFAIR

Joe Pride saddles up two runners in this race, but Rain Affair is the most interesting. He was running incredible times in autumn when he tackled some strong races, including the Newmarket, but he is at his best on a turning track and has a remarkable record in Sydney. He may be slightly vulnerable first-up, but he has class, and with group 1 features beckoning in Melbourne his stable will be keen to see him kick off with a big win.

SUGGESTED BET Take Rain Affair as the winner in exotics and the quaddie.
