GOLF will hit the streets of Cooks Hill today for World Urban Golf Day.

The event is expected to bring more than 50 golfers onto the fairway of Bull Street and raise funds for Youth Off The Streets.

Organiser Robert Pavement-Tee said all money raised for the support service would be used in Newcastle.

‘‘We’re taking golf to the streets to get youth off the streets,’’ he said.

Mr Pavement-Tee said the sport gave golfers a chance to use the irons in an unusual setting, and had run successfully in the area since 2006. Special off-course balls are used for added safety.

‘‘Playing in the street has improved my skills on the green,’’ Mr Pavement-Tee said.

‘‘In six years we’ve never had an injury, breakage or complaint.’’

The Newcastle event, which starts at the Oriental Hotel, is part of a week-long worldwide festival that includes France, the United States and Norway.

Registration is $10 and includes a shirt.
